It's Polo on the Beach

It's Polo on the Beach

The annual Polo on the Beach festival is three days of world class sport, family fun, music, fireworks, champagne and more. But that’s not the best part – the best part is that it’s all just five minutes down the road from our gorgeous Mawgan Porth.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, Polo on the Beach has grown into a hugely popular festival attracting thousands of people with interests ranging from the sports itself, to the horses, the competitors, the music or quite simply that it’s a great family day out.

We’ve picked out some highlights of this fantastic event held at Watergate Bay, May 19 - 21…

The polo

You needn’t worry if you’re not au fait with the rules of beach polo, which are slightly different when played on sand instead of grass.

The two main matches are played at 6.30pm on the Friday and Saturday evenings. Friday will see Team Cornwall fighting to retain their title for the fourth consecutive year against the Rest of the World; the main event - the Aspall Trophy – will be played on the Saturday.

If you want to brush up on the rules have a look at this simple guide or check out the player profiles.

As well as the main events polo demonstrations, jousting displays and Segway polo will also be taking place across the weekend.

Segways are two wheeled self balancing vehicles, when Segway polo was introduced in 2014 it proved hugely popular so should be a favourite with spectators this year. Enjoy watching the professionals play and then have a taster session of your own.

Food, bars and parties

Cornish musician Ruarri Joseph and his new band William the Conqurer will kick off Saturday’s night beach party. Early bird tickets are £25 for adults, or £15 for children aged eight and under.

Throughout the weekend the Aspall beach bar, the gin cocktail bar and the Jaquart Champagne will all be open. Street food will be served throughout the evening, from 7.30pm until late and Origin coffee roasters will be on hand to serve fantastic hot drinks all weekend.

Family fun

Members of Watergate Bay Surf Life Saving Club will be showing off their skills and the popular dog show returns on the Sunday morning for another year. With 10 classes and a best in show, there’s every size, shape and breed taking part.

Let the kids get creative in the craft zone, see how far you can fling your boots in the welly wanging or try out your balancing skills by attempting slacklining, whatever you chose there’s plenty to entertain the whole family.
