Booking a holiday in January also gives you something to look forward to. Not everyone suffers from the winter blues but at this time of year, most people long for warm sunny days. According to Jim Edmondson of the Gabriel Dumont Institute in Canada, having something to look forward to can improve your mood and help you get through the season. And as they have proper winters in Canada, not subtropical ones like we have here in Cornwall, we think Jim must know a thing or two about coping with winter weather!

Don’t miss those sell out gigs

To really build the anticipation, you could also book some things to do while you’re here. Last year saw one of the best line ups for live music that anyone could remember and summer 2017 is expected to be better still. The hugely popular Eden Sessions series of gigs always sell out and with big names such as Madness and Bryan Adams already announced, getting in early to secure your tickets will be vital. Keep an eye on listings such as What’s On Cornwall or destinations such as Hall for Cornwall and you’ll be perfectly placed to grab the best tickets when they go on sale.

Open air theatre is very popular in Cornwall with the spectacular Minack Theatre leading the way. Booking in advance for the summer programme is always recommended.

Visit Cornwall’s gems

Cornwall is also famous for its gardens which are many and varied. Perhaps the most famous of all is the Eden Project but close by – and in many ways the forerunner of Eden – is the beautiful Lost Gardens of Heligan which was abandoned after WW1 and not rediscovered until 1990. Elsewhere, Trebah, Lanhydrock and Trelissick are all gardens where you can lose yourself for an entire day. Many gardens also have programmes of summer entertainment so you could book ahead for those too.

We can’t talk about Cornwall without mentioning Ross Poldark. He might be fictional but many of the places used as locations during the filming of the BBC series are real and are worth a visit. From the atmospheric mine engine ruins at Botallack to the authentic port at Charlestown, there are plenty of opportunities to walk in Ross’s footsteps. You might even bump into the film crew as they shoot scenes for the next series.

Our beaches are worth shouting about - Cornwall has eight Blue Flag beaches on both the north and south coasts, but even those not awarded that accolade are well looked after, perfect for families and most have RNLI Lifeguards in the summer. Visit Cornwall has a really useful section on its website with information on more than 300 beaches in Cornwall – there’s almost one for every day of the year!

The best restaurants require advanced booking

In recent years, Cornwall has become famous for fabulous food. Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Cornwall serves amazing Italian inspired dishes accompanied by a view over Watergate Bay, just down the road from us. Nathan Outlaw’s restaurants at Rock and Port Isaac serve sublime food with a passion for local seafood that is shared with Rick Stein in Padstow. Securing a table for dinner at any of these usually requires booking ahead.
